When you go down the pet food aisle do you know what you’re looking for? Are there specifics you look for when choosing your dog food brand?

If you’re like the average consumer, it’s easy to be swayed by the misleading labels, claims, and colors on the bag. It’s easy to look at a bag of dog food and think by the design on the outside that it is healthy, expensive, human grade food.

We’re going to discuss a few ways to help weed out the bad in your search!

On some of the bags you might notice that pictures of salmon and chicken, maybe even steak and lamb are floating around. It almost looks appetizing, right? So it must be good for your dog…

You’ve heard “it’s what’s on the inside that counts” right? The same applies here. Although the pictures may look delicious for your pet on the outside, it’s really what ingredients are packed into those little pieces of kibble that really matter.

Ingredient List:

On the label you may notice that claims are made of “real beef” or some type of meat, along with vegetables. It sounds like they’d be eating better than you. The trick here is to actually check the ingredient list on the bag. You might notice there is a longer list than you thought.

When taking a look at this list, it’s important to be mindful of the order in which the ingredients appear. The earlier an ingredient is listed, the higher the amount of that ingredient. So if you see the vegetables and tasty ingredients at the end, that might be a problem.

Lastly do you notice any pretty colors of the kibble itself on the bag? These can be artificial colors that make it look more appealing in order to entice you to buy. And just think about that for a second. Do you think your pet is going to snuff up their nose because of the color of their food?

Ultimately the goal is to make the best selection for your pet. It’s easy to be overwhelmed because of all the options available, but knowing these key points can help you make the best selection possible.

Remember that your pet doesn’t have much choice in the matter, so making the most informed, best selection possible is vital for their health.
